On the south-western edge of Kraków, a short way from Wawel, a flooded limestone quarry has become one of the city’s most striking natural spots: Zakrzówek, a reservoir of startling turquoise water ringed by white cliffs, now turned into an official city bathing and recreation area. On a hot day it feels a world away from the Old Town. For the wider picture, see our Kraków travel guide and green Kraków guide.

From quarry to lagoon

The limestone here was worked until the 1990s; when the pumps stopped, groundwater filled the pit to form a deep, clear lake framed by pale rock faces. For years it was a wild spot beloved of divers and swimmers — and, because of the sheer cliffs and cold deep water, a dangerous one. The city has since turned it into a managed bathing and recreation area, opened in 2023, with supervised swimming zones, piers, paths and greenery around the shore.

What to do

In summer, Zakrzówek is for swimming, sunbathing and walking, with designated bathing areas watched by lifeguards and plenty of space along the banks and the surrounding Zakrzówek park. Out of season it is simply a beautiful place for a walk, with the turquoise water and cliffs making it one of the most photogenic corners of the city.

Practical tips

  • Swim only in the designated zones. The water is deep and cold and the cliffs are steep — use the supervised bathing areas and follow the posted rules.
  • Seasonal bathing. The swimming areas operate in the summer season with lifeguards; the park and paths are open year-round.
  • Getting there. South-west of the centre, reachable by tram and bus plus a short walk.
  • Combine it with the rest of green Kraków on a warm day.
