Krakow Airport to City Centre: All Your Options
Kraków Airport (Kraków–Balice, named after John Paul II) sits about 11 km west of the city centre, and getting into town is quick and straightforward. The train is the easy default, but buses, taxis and ride-hailing all work well. Here are your options and how to choose between them. For the bigger picture, see our Kraków travel guide.
By train (the easy option)
A dedicated airport train runs from the station beside the terminal to Kraków Główny, the city’s main railway station on the edge of the Old Town, in about 20 minutes. Trains leave regularly through the day, and the airport station is linked to the terminal by a covered walkway, so you won’t get wet or lost. Buy a ticket from the machines, from the conductor on board, or through a mobile app; validate it if the ticket type requires it. For most visitors staying in or near the centre, this is the simplest and most reliable choice. Check the current timetable on the airport website before you travel.
By bus
City buses also connect the airport with the centre and the main station, taking roughly 40 minutes depending on traffic and stops. There are daytime lines and a night line for late or early flights; the current route numbers are shown at the airport and on the city transport planner. The same tickets work as on the trams, bought from machines or an app and validated on boarding — see getting around Kraków. Buses are cheap and useful if your accommodation is closer to a bus stop than to the station.
By taxi or ride-hailing
A taxi or a ride-hailing app (such as Uber, Bolt or Free Now) takes around 20–30 minutes to the centre, depending on traffic, and makes sense with luggage, a group, or an awkward arrival time. Use the official taxi rank outside the terminal or order through an app so the fare is clear in advance; agree the price or use the meter, and avoid unmarked drivers touting inside the terminal.
Private transfer
Many hotels and operators offer a pre-booked car that meets you in arrivals. It costs more than the train or a standard taxi but takes all the guesswork out of a late-night landing or a first visit.
Which should you choose?
- Staying near the centre or the main station? Take the train — it’s fast, frequent and cheap.
- Travelling light and on a budget? The train or a bus, whichever stops nearer your accommodation.
- Lots of luggage, a group, or a late arrival? A taxi, ride-hailing app or pre-booked transfer.
Getting back to the airport
The same options run in reverse. Trains to the airport leave from Kraków Główny; give yourself a comfortable buffer at peak times, and remember that the airport train and city transport can use different tickets, so check before you board.
