The temporary exhibition ‘Kraków. Dźwięki, melodie, słowa’, prepared by the Muzeum Krakowa, explores the city’s soundscape, the so-called audiosphere of Kraków: the sound of footsteps on cobblestones, the ringing of church bells, music-making in courtyards and the hejnał played from the Mariacka tower. The exhibition shows how the city’s sonic environment has changed over the past hundred years, as well as those phenomena that, despite the passage of time, continue to shape local identity. The exhibition is designed to engage, above all, the sense of hearing.
The exhibition is divided into four thematic sections:
- sounds of streets and squares,
- the voice of the bells,
- music in private and semi-private spaces, namely in courtyards and homes,
- the melody of the hejnał drifting over Kraków.
A sound installation by Marcin Dymiter, an artist who combines electronics, field recording and improvised music, was created specially for the exhibition. The exhibition’s curator is Monika Widzicka. Visitors are accompanied by an educational trail in an interactive, accessible format.
As part of the accompanying programme, educational workshops, sound walks and lectures on the city’s audiosphere are planned. The source does not give dates or times for these activities.
