Best Time to Visit Krakow: A Season-by-Season Guide
There’s no bad time to visit Kraków, but the city feels very different across the year — in weather, crowds, prices and what’s on. This guide runs through the seasons so you can match your trip to what you want from it. For current conditions, check the Kraków forecast, and see our Kraków travel guide for the wider picture.
The short answer
For the best balance of mild weather and manageable crowds, come in late spring (May–June) or early autumn (September). For atmosphere, December and its Christmas market are hard to beat. For the lowest prices and the quietest streets, come in the depths of winter.
Spring (March–May)
Spring is one of the loveliest times to be here. The weather warms steadily, the Planty and the riverside green up, and the café tables return to the Main Square. Crowds are lighter than in summer and prices more reasonable. Early spring can still be chilly and changeable, so pack layers, but by May the city is at its best.
Summer (June–August)
Summer is warm, lively and busy. Days are long and often hot, the squares fill with outdoor cafés and street performers, and the festival calendar is in full swing. It’s also the peak season: the Old Town, Wawel and the day-trip sites are at their most crowded, and accommodation is at its most expensive. Book the major sights and your hotel well ahead, and start early to beat the queues.
Autumn (September–November)
Early autumn rivals late spring for the best all-round conditions — warm, golden days, thinning crowds and softer prices. As November arrives the weather turns grey and cold and the light goes short, though that has its own quiet appeal and the lowest off-season rates.
Winter (December–February)
Winter is cold, often below freezing, with a real chance of snow — and Kraków wears it well. The highlight is December, when one of Poland’s best Christmas markets takes over the Main Square with mulled wine, grilled sausage and crafts under the Cloth Hall. After the holidays, January and February are the quietest and cheapest months of all; wrap up warm, and enjoy having the museums and cafés almost to yourself.
Festivals through the year
Kraków has a full events calendar, from film and music festivals to the Jewish Culture Festival in early summer and the Christmas market in December. If your dates are flexible, it’s worth seeing what’s on during your visit and planning around anything that appeals.
So, when should you go?
- Best weather and fewer crowds: May–June or September.
- Atmosphere and festivities: December, for the Christmas market.
- Long days and a lively buzz: July–August — but expect crowds and higher prices.
- Lowest prices and the quietest city: January–February.
