A musical tragicomedy inspired by ‘Spoon River Anthology’ by Edgar Lee Masters, first published in 1915. The action takes place in the small American town of Spoon River, whose residents rest on a nearby hill. The dead speak of their loves, dreams, secrets and life’s failures. Having nothing left to lose, they speak with complete candour. Behind the gravestones lie stories of unfulfilled ambitions, passions, betrayals, jealousy, family secrets and decisions that cannot be undone.
Directed by Krzysztof Babicki, the production combines spoken word with live music. The characters not only recount their stories but also sing them. Aleksander Brzeziński has composed around a dozen pieces for the show. The thread linking the stories is the red threads of fate, symbolising the characters’ interconnections, chance encounters, choices and their consequences. Translation: Michał Sprusiński.
