A performative reading of Bronisław Maj’s text, staged by Jerzy Zoń, growing out of Stanisław Wyspiański’s ‘Wesele’ and conducting a contemporary dialogue with it. The production has been staged at Teatr KTO since September 2023. Its final performance this year will take place on 9 November 2026.
The piece uses ‘Wesele’ as a template for a conversation about contemporary Poland: about political and social divisions, rituals, aspirations, complexes and collective myths, and about how a community turns into a collective of people speaking at the same time, ever less often listening to one another. It is neither an additional act added to Wyspiański’s play nor a political statement. The creators are interested in the mechanisms by which divisions arise, the language of collective emotion, the tension between the intelligentsia and ‘the people’, activity and stagnation, and the need for community together with the tendency to tear it apart.
The production takes the form of a theatrical wedding with a large cast, music, dance and humour, and direct contact between the actors and the audience. The invitation combines intellectual conversation with disco polo music, accompanied by music, dancing, snacks and drinks.
