A concert from the ‘Gwiazdy z Sinfoniettą’ series featuring American conductor John Axelrod and Sinfonietta Cracovia. The performance marks 25 years of artistic collaboration between the conductor and the Kraków ensemble.
The programme includes works by Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert in arrangements by Gustav Mahler for string orchestra, as well as the famous ‘Adagietto’ from Mahler’s Symphony No. 5.
Sinfonietta Cracovia and Axelrod have worked together for many years. Their shared repertoire has included pieces by Leonard Bernstein, Robert Schumann and John Williams from the ‘Gwiezdne Wojny’ series, among others. Their most significant joint project was their participation in the BBC production ‘Holocaust: A Music Memorial Film from Auschwitz’, during which they recorded Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem in D minor, K. 626, and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki’s Symphony No. 3, ‘Symfonia pieśni żałosnych’. These recordings earned the conductor and orchestra an Emmy Award.
